In Hong Kong, we can find elderly waste pickers who are pushing handcarts and picking cardboards for their livings everywhere.
Iron trolley is the most important means of earning a living for this group of waste pickers, but it does not cater for elders’ use. Meanwhile, elderly waste pickers encounter limitations and inconvenience when working with traditional trolleys.
In view of this, a public design team recruited by Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, local organization Waste Pickers Platform and a social designer worked together to get to know the needs and difficulties of elderly waste pickers in the community. Finally, they came up with ideas to improve the iron trolley for those cardboard recycling elderlies and produced a prototype of newly designed trolley.
